VyprVPN App for Giganews Review!

VyprVPN recently released their production version “1.0” of the VPN client application for Windows.  Giganews customers who subscribe to the diamond plan get the VyprVPN service for free.  This means Giganews customers are now able to download the new VPN client application directly from their Giganews control panel!  Our editors have been big fans of Giganews and VyprVPN for quite some time, so we thought it was high time to get a full review of the VyprVPN app for Giganews out to our readers.

First off, remember that VyprVPN is available without Giganews, should you decide to go that route.  But, if you already subscribe to a usenet service plan, you can save quite a bit of cash by going with the Giganews diamond plan.  You get unlimited usenet, unlimited VPN, and 30GB online storage from Dump Truck!  Not bad at all.  For anyone who just needs VPN, don’t worry, VyprVPN is available for standalone purchase.

Redesigned Giganews Control Panel Includes VyprVPN and Dump Truck!

The VyprVPN app for windows comes in two flavors:  one for the customers of Giganews, and one for people purchasing only VyprVPN.  For all intensive purposes, the app is exactly the same, EXCEPT, only the VyprVPN app for Giganews will accept your Giganews credentials.  So if you try to input your Giganews user and password into the VyprVPN app you downloaded from the VyprVPN website…you’re out of luck!

Ok, so onto the review of the VyprVPN app for Giganews.  First up we have a basic install process for Windows.  Click next a bunch of times.  VyprVPN includes PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN.  The installer will provide the necessary network driver OpenVPN automatically.

The VyprVPN app functions well as a VPN client.  Run the app, and the VyprVPN icon in the taskbar provides all the access you need.

The login screen for the VyprVPN app is the main interface for the VPN client.

The easy to use drop down boxes greatly simplify the process of choosing a country and VPN protocol.  Prior to the release of the Windows app, customers had to manually add the server information each time.  This is a definite improvement and should be a welcome sight for customers!

VyprVPN currently includes the ability to hide your IP using 6 different countries.  You can also select your VPN protocol, and each country offers all VPN protocols:  PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN.  You will also notice that OpenVPN includes the option of 160bit and 256bit.  This is referring to the encryption on the actual data channel.  Higher encryption is more secure, but will normally mean a slower connection.

Once you have selected your country and protocol, simply hit connect and you’re on your way.  We should mention that VyprVPN also has a very handy setting that can detect when you are on unsecured wireless and automatically turn on VPN!  The app will display your IP address and connection state in the upper left corner.

A right click on the VyprVPN app in the taskbar reveals a simple menu that can easily get you back to the main interface.  You can also jump to your Giganews control panel, or connect to any recently chosen VyprVPN servers.

As you can tell, although the app may be only “v1.0”, it’s got a lot of great features that make the VyprVPN service that much better.  Whether you are a Giganews customer, or already a VyprVPN customer the Windows app makes a huge improvement in ease of use.  You can easily select countries and servers without the labor intensive process of adding them individually.  Our editors were also impressed with the setting that can detect when you are on unsecured wireless and automatically active the VPN.  During our tests this setting worked flawlessly, and would be a welcome advantage to anyone with a laptop.  Remember, connecting to open wifi at Starbucks or the airport can often expose to you a lot of risks!  Your online safety while connected to open wifi can be greatly improved with VPN, and having a setting to turn it on automatically is very helpful.

If you’re looking for more on Giganews, we recommend you check our editors Giganews review and see what other users have to say.  As for VyprVPN, we have been following them quite closely and have completed In Depth Review and Full Speed Tests of PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN.  Either service in our opinion is top notch.  If you can spare the extra cash, the Giganews diamond plan is by far the best bang-for-your-buck considering all the included extras:  unlimited usenet, unlimited vpn, and 30GB of free online storage!

I just got a boxee box from D-Link and found out the piece of crap does not do anything in areas like Asia. Low and behold, I used VyprVPN to settle the issue. Definitely helps solve those issues with regional locking. It’s a great tool that let’s me access video like netflix and MLB baseball overseas!
