Private Internet Acess (PIA) is probably one of the most well known private VPN services out there. It’s been on TV, in magazines, on radio, and all over the forums. This is the go-to VPN for many people now and it is often recommended to newbies and veterans alike. Why you might ask? Two things: commitment to privacy with no logging, and ridiculously low prices. PIA does not keep any traffic logs and their annual plan is only insanely low $3.33/month. It is by far one of the absolute lowest prices going for unlimited VPN. The plans include PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, and SOCKS. But wait, the best part is…PIA VPN supports up to 5 simultaneous connections by default!
The service from Private Internet Access is among the best and is typically the reason for their success in the media. The pricing is what keeps the customers keeping back. Their strict policy is definitely No Logs! PIA takes the privacy and security of their customers seriously with a number of customized features in their PIA VPN Software. Software is free and works with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
In response to the well known “DNS leak” that is prevalent amongst VPN connections, PIA has implemented two specific features: DNS Leak Protection and IPv6 Leak Protection. The DNS leak protection feature activates VPN dns leak protection. This ensures that DNS requests are routed through the VPN and not your regular ISP. Many times, even with a VPN connection active, an IP check or DNS check will reveal that the client computer is still routed through their ISP DNS! This feature from PIA enabled in their VPN software provides the greatest level of privacy and security but may cause connectivity issues in non-standard network configurations.
PIA also includes IPv6 leak protection. This disables IPv6 traffic on the cilent computer while on the VPN. This ensures that no IPv6 traffic leaks over your normal internet connection while you are connected to the VPN. The two features combined are one of the most serious attempts we have to combat this well known issue. Kudos to PIA for getting the job done!
One other notable feature included in the PIA VPN software is the “Internet Kill Switch”. The PIA Internet Kill Switch activates user protection again sudden VPN disconnects. If you disconnect from the VPN, your internet access will stop working completely. It will only reactivate internet access once you deactivate the kill switch mode or exit the application. Pretty nifty way of making sure that disconnect doesn’t cause any problems for users anonymity.
SOCKS5 Proxy is included with all accounts. An app is available in the Google Play Store for OpenVPN. PIA is fully mobile capable, with instructions for installation for iOS and Android at their website. But by far the most interesting aspect of PIA is their acceptance of store brand gift cards as payment. Yes, you read that right. Target, Amazon, Starbucks…you name it. You can trade it for VPN access at Private Internet Access!
